What Happened in the 2024 NRL Grand Final?
From the opening whistle, the game was played at a rapid pace. Both sides attacked with purpose, testing each other's defence with flair and physicality. Penrith's Jarome Luai proved agile, but not enough to break through the Melbourne defenders. Shawn Blore made his presence felt with some heavy hits.
But as the teams traded blows, neither could get past that try line.
It took until the 22nd minute for the first points of the match. It was Melbourne who struck first. A big tackle from Munster on Cleary set up a charging run from Blore, and the Storm were moving the ball at a rapid pace. This caught the Panthers off-guard, enabling Harry Grant to score the opening try.
It wasn't long before Penrith responded. After winning a full set in the Storm's half, Turuva dived into the corner off the back of some silky passing between Cleary, Luai and Alamoti. At this point Penrith managed to scrape 4 points, but the conversion was missed leaving the score at 6-4 to Storm.
Just before halftime, Penrith snatched the lead. Turuva found himself back near the line but he was held before he could cross. From this, Luai went for the long pass which found holes in the Storm's defence. Martin eventually found himself with the ball and crossed to put the score 10-6 before the break.
Early into the second half we saw controversy. Howarth's try for Storm was denied following a TMO review, which cost Storm a potential 6 points. Storm's attack was looking particularly strong, but they still failed to get past Penrith's rock-solid defence.
As the second half wore on, the back and forth continued until Penrith found another moment of magic. Alamoti dived into the corner off the back of some beautiful play. Penrith’s lead was now 14-6.
Melbourne fought tooth and nail to fight for the Championship, it would have been their fifth title. But it wasn't to be, Penrith were just too strong and continued their new legacy.
Final score 14-6 to Penrith Panthers.
