The FA have some large shoes to fill. Southgate has been the most successful manager for the men's England squad since 1966. As much as he divided fans, he gave England supporters some of their best years. So what does the next England Manager betting look like?
There are a number of names on the FA's shortlist. Below we provide our opinions on some of the bookies favourites for the next England Manager.
Next England Manager odds are correct at the time of writing this article. Updated 14/10/24.
Carsley - was 7/2 NOW 4/1
Since Gareth Southgate's departure, we saw U21s manager Lee Carsely take the job on an interim basis. He had already won the U21 2023 European Championships with England. This was the first time since 1984. Southgate also successfully made the progression from U21s boss to managing the senior side. This meant that Lee Carsley taking the role on an interim basis was the natural thing to do.
As predicted, it's not a quick turnaround securing a star manager for England. This gives Carsely time to prove himself. Unfortunately, his hopes of getting the job on a permanent basis have taken a major hit after England's home defeat to Greece on 10th October. However, the former U21s boss still has two games left in November to stake his claim for the top job.
He entered the fold at 7/2 but he now stands at 4/1.
Thomas Tuchel - 1/2
The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss has recently emerged as the favourite for the job. He no doubt has the experience and style of play to suit England but the German has caught the eye of other clubs. He is currently favourite to replace Erik ten Haag as Manchester United boss (9/4). This would prove to be a stumbling for the FA in their hunt for Southgate’s replacement.
Eddie Howe - was 11/4 NOW 8/1
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was tagged as a future England Manager ever since his impressive spell with Bournemouth. He has done a great job with Newcastle so far but an offer to lead the Three Lions could be very tempting.
Ever since Southgate stepped down Howe has been a popular pick amongst fans. He has had a good start to this season with the Magpies. England's last two performances have also been less than convincing. Put the two together and the public pressure to appoint the former Bournemouth man won't be going anywhere.
Howe previously expressed how the England role would be his dream job, surely he would not turn down the opportunity?
Newcastle do not want to let their man leave, so the FA may face a battle to get the former cherries boss on board.
Graham Potter - was 7/2 NOW 8/1
Graham Potter is a strong contender for the England role. He transformed a struggling Brighton squad, from lurking near the bottom of the table to finishing 9th. Potter was hailed for his progressive style of football.
This soon caught the attention of Chelsea, who had a number of problems and desperately needed a strong manager. However, this was not to be. Potter struggled at Chelsea and lasted only until April 2023 before he was dismissed.
Potter has not had a coaching role since, could this be the job he has been waiting for?
Pep Guardiola - was 28/1 NOW 8/1
Back in July, you would have to have been bold to start throwing Pep's name around. It wasn't long before the news outlets began to speculate and the idea started to catch on. Now, three months later the odds have shortened to 8s. Can we dream?
Mauricio Pochettino - was 11/1 NOW 100/1
Mauricio Pochettino had allegedly shown interest in the job. Being one of the more ‘glamorous’ names on this list, Pochettino has had high profile roles at Chelsea, PSG and Tottenham. He seemed like a viable option at first but he has since taken on the role of head coach for the USA national team.
Poch's time at Spurs showed his true potential. He lead Tottenham to a Champions League final for the first time ever. Giving the fans some long awaited hope. However, this was in 2019, he has struggled in his more recent roles.
Despite this, he could be a good fit for England. He would be reunited with star striker Harry Kane, who looked flat during Euro 2024. Could Poch rediscover that magic we are missing from Kane? As nice as it sounds, it is now very unlikely.
Jurgen Klopp - was 12/1 NOW 66/1
Little needs to be said here. Klopp would be the dream appointment for a lot of England fans. The former Liverpool boss was a hero for the Reds, with many fans heartbroken that he decided to leave. After his 'mini retirement', Klopp has recently taken on the role of Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull. Since this news, he has indicated that he doesn't want to manage a team again. Taking this into consideration, 66/1 seems far too short as this appointment is near-on impossible.
Our Thoughts on Next England Manager Betting
Things have changed a lot over the last three months, some prices have shortened and some surprise names have emerged. Our initial gut feeling was Eddie Howe, and we can't help but think this will be the FA's long term solution. Tuchel has quickly emerged as favourite but is that just because of England's recent performances?
